It's not surprising when people make excuses to avoid going out to pray at a 40 Days for Life vigil.
It is surprising to be told that Jesus's instructions to his followers prohibit public prayer for an end to abortion.
So how do we reconcile standing vigil for all to see with our Lord's command to "pray to your Father...in secret"?

Santa Ana, Teusaquillo, Colombia
The 40 Days for Life team in Santa Ana, Teusaquillo, met a teenage girl who was leaving the abortion facility.
She had come to get information on a late-term abortion.
Thankfully, before she went through with the procedure, she accepted vigil participants' invitation to meet her baby through an ultrasound.
After meeting her six-month-old baby--and with help from the vigil team--she chose life for her child!
Naples, Florida
Former Planned Parenthood manager Ramona Trevino's recent tour of Florida 40 Days for Life campaign wrapped up in Naples, where a large group gathered in prayer.
The CEO of a local pregnancy help center told Ramona that her message helps keep pro-lifers from looking at abortion workers as their enemies.
"Ramona, you've now put a face on those working inside."
Ramona was moved by that message--as were attendees who thanked her for serving as a reminder to pray for abortion workers.
"This Lent, I will be celebrating 14 years since leaving Planned Parenthood," she said. "When Christ instructs us to love our neighbor as ourselves, that includes those working inside the abortion industry."
But to you who hear I say, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.

Lord, you showed friendship to the sinners and outcasts. You have been merciful in offering friendship to me. I long for true friendship with you and a Christ-centered friendship with those who need me. Let me show your kindness to those who fight against the right to life. Let me be understanding of their misguided intentions and own experiences. Let me be a bridge over which people may cross to your truth, goodness, and love.
